Frustrating gaming moments of 2008

Vigster (GameNews) writer Roisi Proven looks at the top frustrating gaming moments of the last year.

Over the past month there has been literally dozens of lists about the best and worst games of 2008. But what about the most frustrating? Those games that might have been fantastic, but either through bugs or by design drove you to tears as you found yourself repeating the same level over and over again. This list brings together the top 5 moments that had gamers crying themselves to sleep at night as they faced yet another respawn or restart.

5.Fallout 3 Bugs – The eagerly anticipated game by Bethesda came out to critical acclaim, but also to a large number of complaints on the forums and in stores. The worst thing that can possibly happen when you’re really getting into a game is for it to crash on you midway through a battle, causing you to have to repeat large sections of the game again. This is what happened to many players of Fallout 3, and I myself have had to retire it to the back of my gaming shelf due to an as-yet unfixed Jefferson Memorial bug.

4.Fable 2 Bugs – Fable 2 was yet another game released in the Christmas period that was marred by game breaking bugs. What with distracted monks, numerous sticking points in Bloodstone and being told to assassinate your own child, many gamers were forced to stop playing and even return the game. The reason that this is higher up on the list than Fallout 3, however, was the “would be hilarious if it wasn’t so annoying” reaction of one of the community managers on the Lionhead forums. This employee launched a childish tirade and irate customers, and even began banning anyone who dared to report bugs with the game. Thankfully, this employee now seems to be absent from the forums, but the last thing you need is to ask for help and be swiftly attacked with the ban hammer.

3.Geometry Wars 2 Leaderboards and Achievements- The original Geometry Wars was frustrating. You plug away, thinking you’re doing so well, but when you look at the Leaderboards you are still at number 465832. Geometry Wars 2 added to this frustration by making 6 modes instead of just 1 to feel vastly inferior to everyone else at. Not only that, but the new achievements have seen me close to throwing the controller at the TV in anger after the millionth go at trying to “Wax Off”.

2.The Last Remnant battle system- I was so excited about The Last Remnant. Although I had my reservations about Square Enix using the Unreal engine, I was glad to have something to hold my attention until the Holy Grail that is Final Fantasy XII came out. That is, I was excited until I “played” my first battle. I lined up the commands, these guys attack them, these other guys attack those ones over there. Then I sat. For about 5 minutes. Doing pretty much nothing. I couldn’t even watch the action properly because I had to spend my time looking at the tiny square in the middle of the screen where the seemingly useless RTE’s appeared. I gave up after a while, mainly because I wasn’t really sure what was going on and if I could make my characters better, but also because the balancing of the main story seemed to mean that I just couldn’t win.

1.All of Ikaruga – There is one simple reason that this game is number 1 in this list. It is because it is VERY, VERY, VERY HARD. Excruciatingly, bafflingly hard. I came very close to destroying the sticks on my controller because every time I thought I’d got the hang of it, all the bullets changed colour and some monster filled the screen. I really don’t know how anyone manages to get past about the third level in this game.

Great article! Ikaruga has to be one of the most frustrating games that I have ever played. I haven’t been able to pick it up for a while now, as whenever I try to play it I end up throwing the controller :(
